When designing this 2-story office space
in downtown Bethesda, Maryland, the variation in ceiling
height allowed for an emphasis on volume & geometry
within the space. In addition, atmosphere & lighting
became a main focus on this job.
The bulkheads on the upper level, accented
with contrasting paint colors,
create a grid effect on the ceiling which is then mimicked
with the grid of
the carpet on the floor. Likewise, the circular shape
of the dimmable
recessed & pendant light fixtures reflects in the
circles seen in the custom
stair rail & the fabric in the reception area.
On the lower level, the ceiling height
was more of a challenge at barely
8'-3", requiring that their depth was taken to
a minimum, and recessed
ambient lighting was used in lieu of pendants to provide
an evenly distributed light that would not produce glare
on the computer screens.
The use of a soft & earthy palette
echoes the tenant's focus on hospitality clients. The
addition of contrasting black accents provides a sophisticated
& professional edge to the otherwise cozy &
comfortable environment
