What We Do

For nearly 30 years, Neighborhood Health, a nonprofit Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), has served Northern Virginia with a commitment to improving community health and advancing health equity through accessible, high-quality care regardless of ability to pay. Interplan recently designed the Neighborhood Health Pediatric Center on Columbia Pike in Arlington, transforming approximately 10,000 SF of former gym space in the basement of a mixed-use residential complex into a vibrant, patient-centered healthcare facility. Preparing the space for clinical use required extensive demolition, including the removal of existing gym infrastructure and raised flooring systems.

Bringing natural light into the below-grade environment was a central design challenge. Interplan introduced sidelights at office doors and clerestory windows at both perimeter and interior offices, while carefully integrating lighting, color, and pattern throughout the space. The result is a bright, playful, and welcoming atmosphere for pediatric patients that also provides the durability and efficiency required in a clinical setting. The facility includes eighteen exam rooms, three dental operatories, two optometry exam rooms, two nurse stations, a behavioral health consultation room, care team offices, restrooms, and a staff pantry. Interplan also coordinated closely with vision and dental leadership to address functional requirements and collaborated with Neighborhood Health’s signage vendor to align environmental graphics and wayfinding with the interior finishes, creating a cohesive and unified experience.
